Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

Hi, I have a Samsung PL100. When I turn it on the lens extends and then buzzes for about two seconds, the camera will then not focus (though it will zoom in and out). I have to admit that I have had the zoom unit apart to look for anything obvious, so it may need replacing. Is there any procedure I can use to seat the lenses in the correct position before switching on or can you advise on anywhere that sells these zoom units, as I cannot find any suppliers? Many thanks Steve O.

Answers :

Unfortunately you have probably already turned your camera to scrap. Optical repairs of that type need specialist equipment, and in practice the tolerances are so fine that the only fix is to replace the entire optical assembly.

In your case, the PL100 is a budget model, so the manufacturer generally won't supply or fit anything other than the most basic and easily replaceable parts. I've already confirmed that Samsung certainly do not list the optical assembly for the PL100 as a spare part. If there was a warranty claim involving anything more serious they just inspect what's been returned to confirm the fault and to check that it's not due to misuse or an accident and then send you a new replacement camera. It saves them the enormous costs of having a spare parts supply chain and having to train and employ more technicians than necessary.

You can buy a brand new replacement PL100 now for \302\24389 with a full warranty; that's typically far less than a complete optical assembly costs for the few compact models where it is worth supplying the part.

The only other thing which may have worked before you dismantled the optical assembly is detailed below as my standard cut and paste answer (lens faults are incredibly common). There's a very slim chance it may still work for your model but even if it does, it's now highly unlikely that your camera will ever achieve sharp focus again.

Your camera almost certainly has a lens error, this\015\012 is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock \015\012generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common \015\012reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair \015\012chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is \015\012commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it \015\012having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera \015\012was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and \015\012tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply\015\012 become \015\012dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera\015\012 is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse \015\012then contact the Canon service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If \015\012the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed \015\012the\015\012 cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose \015\012by \015\012trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here\015\012 and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera \015\012Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically\015\012 manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article\015\012 mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras \015\012with lens errors and is not model-specific.

Good\015\012\015\012\015\012 luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera, or \015\012at least are able to use the information to help decide whether to buy \015\012another camera. If you do \015\012decide that you have to throw your camera away then don't forget to \015\012remove the memory card as it can be used in other devices. \015\012
These are calibrated when the lens is fully closed

I have a canon EF 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens that has a zoom lock switch. When in the unlocked position and I try to zoom the lens it sticks at around the 200mm mark and cannot seem to move it below that positon, I need to wiggle the barrel before the zoom seems to "let go" and the lens goes to other positions. This is quite a problem as the lens cannot be operated in all its positions. Also when trying to get it unstuck, it feels like I am applying too much force and could further damage
